ABOUT LEAH

Hi! My name is Leah Opas, but most of my shipmates call me Swag-Ops. I'm from the not-so-quiet suburbs of Fairfax, Virginia, where I've lived most of my life. I'm the oldest of three; my younger brother, Reilly, is a freshman at Randolph Macon Military Academy, my sister, Victoria, is seven years younger and already planning her way into medical school. I applied to the Academy during my senior year of high school and after all the uniquely challenging experiences I’ve had thus far, even in my short cadet career, I can honestly say that I couldn’t see myself anywhere but at a service academy like the USCGA.

I’ve chosen to pursue the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering major at the Academy, but I also cultivate a healthy appreciation on the side for all things chemistry. Since I hope to someday fly helos, I’m also a part of the Flight Team.

When I’m not at the office (as we often refer to being on campus), I love to windsurf, sail, and run. The New England area has some pretty awesome sailing conditions so I try to get out and enjoy them on the weekend. Fortunately, I’m able to get out on the water almost every day during sports period as a part of our 1st-in-the-nation D1 dinghy sailing team. I love teaching and working with others, and I’m always available to answer any questions you might have about the Academy at Leah.M.Schweigert-Opas@uscga.edu.

Semper P and Go Bears,
Leah
