Lumberton, NJ - Class of 2015
Major: Government

"Never start anything off with a quote.” My high school AP Government teacher told me that when I started writing my essays for application to the USCGA, I should definitely do no such thing. It’s only fair to give him some credit, because I am here, after all! Welcome aboard! I am Sam Krakower, a cadet who absolutely loves the path that the Coast Guard Academy has taken me on so far! If you have any questions, my email is Samuel.Krakower@uscga.eduso don’t hesitate to ask me anything, I’ll get back to you in at most 24 hours. Now, let’s see what I can tell you about myself. I’m from good ol’ New Jersey, (South Jersey, let's make that clear!) I have absolutely no connection to the Coast Guard prior to my coming here, and I can tell you, this place is great.

I’m actually very lucky to be here, though I got my appointment in December 2010, I became medically disqualified not just from the Coast Guard, but all branches of service. That made me lose my NROTC, AFROTC, and U.S. Air Force Academy Appointments, as well as my CGA one. However, after a long battle, I was able to get a waiver to come here, even though all other services said the decision was final. I am eternally grateful for that.

I honestly can say this was the perfect college for me. Everything about this place is just amazing; its tradition, the history, drilling, the sports, extracurricular activities, it’s all great. I play lacrosse here, as well as being apart of Glee Club, Idlers, Model UN, and the Drama Program, to name a few things that I do here aside from studying and homework!

After CGA, I hope to be a Deck Watch Officer aboard an icebreaker, then go to law school and be a JAG for a Coast Guard. One day at a time, though, I’m still just a cadet!
