About IFL
RADM Robert C. Olsen, USCG (ret)
During his tenure as Superintendent at U.S. Coast Guard Academy, RADM Robert C. Olsen provided an enduring vision for the Academy that included a practicum model for leader development and the need for an endowed chair in leadership studies to operationalize that vision. Early in 2004, Dr. James S. Tyler, a member of the class of 1958, approached the U.S. Coast Guard Alumni Association with an interest in endowing this chair in leadership studies. From this visionary leadership and generous gift, the Dr. James S. Tyler Distinguished Chair in Leadership Studies and the Institute for Leadership became a reality during the 2004-05 academic year.
