Mr. Jonathan Heller

Mr. Heller is the Director of the Admiral James M. Loy Institute for Leadership. He is an alumnus of cutters WMEC Campbell and WLM Red Birch before becoming a Coast Guard financial manager and faculty member at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he served on the Management Department faculty and as Regimental Officer (analogous to Associate Dean of Students). For “fun,” Jon has directed the Academy’s cadet musical since 2000; teaches accounting at the University of Connecticut Avery Point campus; coaches youth sports in his community; chairs Groton, Connecticut’s task force to recapitalize its aging schools; serves on the board of directors of HigherEdgeCT, whose mission is to help first generation students to and through the college experience; and is a doctoral candidate in higher educational leadership at Central Connecticut State University.

Jon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy, a Master of Business Administration from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia, and completed the course work requirements for a doctorate in Management at the University of Rhode Island. He is a Partnership for Public Service Excellence in Government Senior Fellow, a certified college counselor and ICF accredited corporate coach and a Coast Guard Master Training Specialist. He was awarded the American Society of Military Comptroller’s Comptroller of the Year in 1998 and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Naval Order Instructor of the Year Award in 2001, Spirit of the Bear Award in 2011 and its Alumni Association’s Distinguished Volunteer Award in 2014.

A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, Jon is now of Mystic, Connecticut with his wife Laura. They have two children: Morgan and Colin.
